Plas Newydd, a Grade II listed building, lies to the south of the town with views of Castell Dinas Bran to the north.
From 1780 - 1831, it was the home of Lady Eleanor Butler and Sarah Ponsonby, who were originally from Ireland. It is said the two women always enjoyed dressing up in male clothing.
The two ladies, who were known as ‘Ladies of Llangollen', transformed the garden with shrubs, borders, a herb garden and romantic garden structures.
Plas Newydd received many visitors during the tenancy of Eleanor and Sarah, including members of the Royal family, the Duke of Wellington and also Wordsworth.
During the late 19 th and early 20 th century the house was acquired by various tenants who altered and extended the gardens. It is now one of the many properties owned by Cadw.
The ‘Ladis of Llangollen' are said to have loved the house so much, that they refuse to leave.
Both women have been seen drifting around the house, dressed in their male attire, particularly on Christmas Eve.
